COVENTRY—To raise awareness of the numerous food-related businesses throughout the state, Congressman Jim Langevin traveled to different restaurants, wineries and fisheries last week, making a stop at ShelaLara Vineyard in Coventry on Saturday.
Langevin said he met with Davide Dukecevich, co-owner of Daniele, Inc. last summer to discuss the food industry in Rhode Island.
“He said we should be thinking big and thinking about making Rhode Island a food destination,” he added. “If you look around and focus on the things we have, we have many restaurants and food producers, we have fishing industry, we have Oyster farms, we have federal hill and then we have Johnson & Wales that trains culinary students.”
During his week-long tour, he met with leaders from agriculture, fisheries, hospitality, manufacturing and food sales to discuss their businesses and ways to ensure they remain successful.
“When I met with Davide back in August, he talked about the possibility of branding Rhode Island as the ‘Silicon Valley of Food’,” he said. “That concept resonated with me, and I believe that the business savy, enthusiasm and determination of individuals like Davide can make that idea a reality.”
Langevin began his tour at Daniele’s Inc., in Burrillville and soon made his way down to ShelaLara Vineyard off Reservoir Road in Coventry.
Owner Sheila Gold decided to take up wine making as her hobby after she became a widow; once she realized her love for the business she decided to open up the winery in Providence with her sons.
The family owned business moved to Coventry in 2005, growing grapes on a 10 acre plot of land three miles from the winery facility.
