COVENTRY— Local firefighters braved the Artic temperatures Friday morning to save a dog that fell through the ice on the Pawtuxet River.
Coventry Fire District firefighter Jon Pascua explained that at 9:30 a.m. the district received a 911 call regarding a dog stuck in the freezing river off of Laurel Avenue.
When crews arrived, he said, they noticed the adult german shepherd’s head was barely above the water.
“It was struggling to get out,” he added. “We were concerned the dog was going to go under because it was showing signs of fatigue.”
Firefighters Stephen Mann and Joe Hartman decided to throw on the ice recovery dry suits and venture into the water with a rescue sled to save the dog, who’s named Dallas.
When Mann approached Dallas, Pascua said, the canine used all his energy to swim over towards the firefighter.
