PROVIDENCE—The East Greenwich boys soccer team advanced to the semifinals of the Division II tournament thanks to a thrilling 1-0 shootout victory at Classical Tuesday night.
According to Avenger coach Pat McGuirl EG had a goal called back in the fifth minute of the game and from there neither team could get on the scoreboard.
After the overtime sessions the two teams went into the shootout where goalkeeper Nolan Cooney made two saves and freshman Brendan Jordan’s score – the seventh attempted by EG – secured the victory.
In the shootout Joe Madden, Andres Naranjo, Neil Fashon and Pat Lavan each scored, while Ryan Douglas had one hit the post and bounce out.
The No. 9 Avengers will now face top-seeded Lincoln Saturday at 6:30 p.m. at Lincoln High School.
