EAST GREENWICH — The Coventry boys soccer team certainly likes to do things the hard way.
The Oakers had chances to clinch a playoff berth before Wednesday night’s contest at East Greenwich, but the Oakers tied last-place Warwick Vets and then disappointed in a home loss to Westerly Monday afternoon.
So, the only thing standing between the Oakers and a playoff spot was a point against an East Greenwich team playing for their third straight Division II-South title on Senior Night.
And, for the second time this season, the Oakers shocked the Avengers. Junior forward Joe Corcelli scored goals on either side of halftime, while senior goalie Rob Gallucci blocked a Connor Pease breakaway in the 65th minute to secure a 2-1 road victory.
“This team is a hot-and-cold team,” Coventry coach Rick Frigon said after being showered with water following the win. “They do phenomenal things, but at times they take things for granted. That loss to Westerly was ugly, but tonight we laid it on the table and took control of our destiny.”
