WEST WARWICKâ As part of a national campaign, students throughout the district sported orange shirts yesterday to raise awareness of childhood hunger.
In addition to wearing the brightly colored ensembles, the students also brought in canned goods to be donated.
With a whopping 793 items collected, Horgan Elementary School came out on top.
Donna Peluso, Principal of Horgan, explained that all students, teachers and Sodexo workers were asked to wear orange and bring in one canned good.
âI sent a notice home to all the parents letting them know orange day is held to raise awareness about childhood hunger,â she added. âEvery child that brought in a canned good got a ticket and the ticket was for an extra 15 minutes of recess this week.â
Cathy Rocco, District Manager for Sodexo, explained that this national event is sponsored by Share Our Strengthâs No Kid Hungry campaign.
According to nokidhungry.org, 16 million children in America struggle with hunger and the campaign was created to bring about change.
She said this is the first year that Sodexo has joined in to help raise awareness about childhood hunger.
