NEWPORT—Things started to heat up in the New England Collegiate Baseball League earlier this week as the Newport Gulls claimed second place in the Southern Division, meaning the third place Ocean State Waves would have to travel to Newport to begin the opening divisional-round of the playoffs.
For a league that is commonly recognized to many people as the second-best summer collegiate league in the nation, it sure looked that way this past week during the first round playoffs with the new-look Rhode Island NECBL playoff rivalry stirring up.
Game one started on Monday night and the Waves continued their winning streak by taking the first matinee at Cardines Field in Newport, 4-2. Wave’s reliever David Gerber picked up the win to get the Waves closer to their first-ever playoff win in the team’s history.
