SOUTH KINGSTOWN â Two University of Rhode Island professors have broken ground in the study of juvenile delinquents through a thorough investigation of the present and past students of the Ocean Tides school in Narragansett, an alternative learning center for boys who would otherwise be in a training school or prison.
Lawrence C. Grebstein, professor emeritus of psychology and a consultant to Ocean Tides for 39 years, and Judy A. Van Wyk, associate professor of sociology, have been working together on the study for twelve years, creating and analyzing an accessible database of the information that Grebstein had collected throughout his tenure at Ocean Tides. The data analysis was used to write a book called âTides of Misfortune and Mayhem: Treating Male Juvenile Delinquents,â which is now being vetted through publishers across the country.
