KINGSTON–The University of Rhode Island's East Farm on Route 108 in Kingston is colored red again as the URI Master Gardeners have their annual poinsettia and wreath sale on Saturday, Dec. 4 from 9 a.m. to noon.
East Farm is one of 30 test sites in the United States that raises and researches poinsettias, growing 67 varieties.

"We're part of a national trial. We raise poinsettias that are not for the market yet. We do data research on them," Francine McVay, the project manager and Master Gardener said.
The URI Master Gardeners collect data on the plants height, color and size of leaves and bracks. Manufactures design their poinsettias in the hope that as they develop their plants will result in the design they aimed for.
"Every day every single one is handled and researched. Sometimes it's not what [the manufacturer] wanted. Sometimes they don't like the color. Some come out the way they're supposed to. Only through a trained eye, you know what's it supposed to look like. Someone else would say they like it, but in research we would say no good. When you're looking at the plant, you think it's gorgeous, but we're looking at it with a very critical eye," McVay said.
