UFD Chief Perry to retire next week

July 30, 2014

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – After 10 years as chief of the Union Fire District, Bob Perry is retiring next Monday.
Perry, who has been a firefighter for 47 years, said he has been planning to retire for a couple years, either in December or next June, but the Union Fire District Board of Wardens asked him to leave sooner. While Perry said he requested to leave in December or January, he said the board insisted he leave Aug. 4.
When asked why the board wanted him to leave so soon Perry said, “I don’t want to get into that.”
Still, he said he is happy to be retiring.
“I’m very happy to be leaving and spend time with my family and do some of the things I’ve been wanting to do for a while,” Perry said by phone Tuesday. “I’m going back to the Wakefield fire station where I started. My son is there and my friends are there.”
