The intersection of Tower Hill Road with Mooresfield Road on Route 138 was listed as number 23 out of 50 most dangerous intersections in Rhode Island from 2006 to 2009.

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – South Kingstown has two of the top 25 worst intersections in the state according to a state Department of Transportation report to federal officials.

The intersection of South County Commons Way with Tower Hill Road on Route 1 was ranked as the sixth worst intersection for accidents. The intersection of Tower Hill Road with Mooresfield Road on Route 138 was listed as 23rd.

The DOT report is based on data from accident reports for the three years from 2006 to 2009, compiled from data sent from each town and city police department. The intersections were chosen based on the number of accidents and their severity. The DOT then calculates a cost for each accident depending on if it involves fatalities, injuries or property damage.

“The state gets the information from the accident information we automatically send to the state for data collection,” South Kingstown Police Captain Jeffrey Allen said.

According to the report, the cost of accidents at the Route 1 intersection is $3,279,900 with a total of 79 accidents over the three year period. Of those accidents, there were 22 injuries and one fatality. At the Route 138 intersection, the cost of accidents is $2,325,800 with a total of 183 accidents. Accidents at the Tower Hill Road and Mooresfield Road intersection resulted in 31 injuries and no fatalities.
