Rhode Island’s largest teacher’s union took a hit on Tuesday when it confirmed its secretary, 58-year-old Louis Rainone of Cranston, had resigned following his arrest at a union meeting at a waterfront East Greenwich restaurant and bar last Friday.
According to published reports, police reports from the East Greenwich

Police Department say Rainone, the secretary for NEARI allegedly punched West Warwick resident Kenneth Chattelle, 54, in the face at the Harborside on Water Street in East Greenwich sometime around 2:30 Friday afternoon.
“We became aware of the incident late Friday and we are looking into it,” began a statement issued by the NEARI Tuesday afternoon. “It is regrettable and though it happened during a union meeting — and not on state time — we regard this as a private matter. Mr. Rainone held an elected position. He is not and has not been an employee of NEARI,” it continued. “At this point Mr. Rainone has stepped aside from his elected position. We will have no further comment at this time,” it finished.
Charged with simple assault or battery and disorderly conduct, Rainone was released on his own recognizance and is due in District Court in Warwick on June 21.
