NORTH KINGSTOWN—From March 2 to March 8, local restaurants will be opening their doors to customers new and familiar as part of the first annual Taste of NK Restaurant Week. The event, organized by the North Kingstown Chamber of Commerce, is aimed at bringing more customers into North Kingstown to enjoy local cuisine.

“Every other chamber of commerce does a restaurant week, and ours did not,” said Martha Pughe, executive director of the North Kingstown Chamber of Commerce. “I thought we should be celebrating our restaurants as well, so it was very important to have a restaurant week in North Kingstown.”

According to Pughe, restaurants will offer specially made appetizers, entrees and desserts to customers, all at discounted prices. Participating restaurants include Sonoma Bistro, Pier Pizza, The Carriage Inn and Saloon, and Jitters Café, among others.

“Each restaurant came up with their own special to provide, from breakfast to dinner,” said Pughe.

Pughe praised the work of Kerrie Vieira-Lanoie, owner and operator of Sonoma Bistro, who helped the executive director in planning and setting up the restaurant week late last year.

“I talked to five or six restaurants in the fall, all who said this is great, awesome,” she said. “Because the Christmas period is too crazy, I sent a letter to all of our restaurant members after New Year’s Day [about the week].”

Yesterday evening, the chamber held Sample A Taste of NK, a prelude to restaurant week. A number of participating restaurants gathered at the Quonset O Club, giving attendees a sneak peek at the upcoming specials. Lanoie, who was on hand at the sampling event, stated that she hopes the restaurant week opens eyes to customers about the dining options which North Kingstown boasts.

“We are really excited to be involved,” said Lanoie. “This is our second year here, and it is really exciting to see North Kingstown develop into almost like a downtown Providence. We have new restaurants that keep opening, and we need to work as a team to make this more of a go-to.”

“We have restaurants just as good as East Greenwich, but we lack that main street pull,” she continued. “[A Taste of NK] will give us the opportunity to have little of that, so it is just one more notch.”

Pughe concurred with Lanoie, saying that the week will provide the community a chance to learn about local restaurants and the people working hard behind the scenes for them. “I hope the restaurant owners get their loyal base of customers having a great time, and to introduce new residents to specials being offered,” said Pughe. “I hope for residents to have some great meals and a great time at North Kingstown restaurants.”

“We want to celebrate that we are North Kingstown and we have great stuff here too,” she added.
