Some last minute shopping ideas

December 22, 2010

Some ideas to help decide what to give.

Our favorite time of the year has finally come; parties, holiday shopping, eating more than anyone should
the festivities are here and we can barely keep up. This poses one of our biggest struggles: holiday shopping. Buying gifts for seniors has become increasingly difficult as they often already own what they want. However this year, a national survey from HISC has come to give us a hand.

Since 1994, the Home Instead Senior Care (HISC) network provides seniors non-medical in-home care services. HISC encourages involvement with the community in uplifting programs such as Be a Santa to a Senior, that encourage visitors to a senior without family or are lonely during the holidays. Having this knowledge base, they understand seniors’ needs and wants. They inform us that this economy has inspired seniors, who tend to already be cautious, to become even more financially mindful. A top-10 gift list compiled for seniors include all practical and economical items.
“Out of necessity or, perhaps, driven by fear, the economic downturn has made older adults even more practical. Social services budget cuts also have impacted the pockets of seniors, leaving some lacking the money for necessities,” said Gary Leiter in a press release, owner of HISC office in Rhode Island. The following list is a reflection of what seniors stated they would appreciate most during the holidays.
1.  Blankets or Throws
2.  Slippers and Socks
3.  Toiletries such as lotions, bath soaps, cologne and perfume
4.  Pajamas and Robes
5.  Food such as sausages, cheeses and chocolates
6.  Kitchen and Bath Towels
7.  Clothes such as sweat pants, sweaters and underwear
8.  Large-Print Books and Puzzles
9.  Cards and Stamps
10. Gift Certificates to grocery and discount stores.
Don’t forget companionship services.
While these items may be very practical, the loved one receiving your gift will be very appreciative. With the cold winter approaching, who wouldn’t love a blanket, throw or slippers to get you through?
