Skippers can't hold off Coventry, Oakers heading to D-I Finals

KINGSTON—The Coventry girls volleyball team was forced to sit and wait in the stands at URI’s Keaney Gymnasium for well over an hour Tuesday night as Prout and Mount St. Charles battled back and forth in an epic, five-game showdown that the Crusaders ultimately won 21-25, 25-15, 20-25, 25-11, 19-17 to earn a spot in the Division I Finals.
It’s safe to say the Oakers didn’t mind, however, as what happened when they finally hit the floor was a moment eight years in the making.
Coventry senior Courtney DiBiasio had a team-high 11 kills, teammate Hannah Cole added 17 assists and the Oakers wasted little time in taking care of North Kingstown 25-23, 25-18, 25-15 to advance to their first state title game since the 2002 season.
“This is what we set out for at the beginning of the year,” Coventry coach Leo Bush said afterward. “To be one of the two teams playing in the last game. And North Kingstown is a great team and they put up a great fight and they’ve got a great group over there and their coaches did a great job getting them ready for this season. We’re fortunate to be one of the last two teams out there.”
