SOUTH KINGSTOWN – With 24 students qualified for an All-State ensemble and three students selected to perform with the All-East honors ensemble, it would be no surprise if the next Charlie Parker, Johann Sebastian Bach or Louis Armstrong comes from the South Kingstown High School band.

For a chance to play in the state's most elite musical ensembles, South Kingston High School students competed with 2,000 other Rhode Island students at the Moses Brown School in December. Qualifying students will be able to perform and rehearse with the 7th to 9th grade junior division and the 10th and 12th grade senior division under the direction of well known guest conductors to prepare for public concerts in February and March. Despite the sheer number of students competing to play for an All-State ensemble, this year all of the South Kingstown High School students that auditioned were ranked among the best in the state. Twenty-four of them qualified for an All-State ensemble with freshman Brian Bouchard qualifying for two ensembles and students Brian and Catherine Livolsi, Meghan Lindley, Alexa Pagliaro and Justin Smith earning the top seat for their instruments.

Yet, not only will musicians from the high school compete on the state-level, they have also succeeded in competing with 10,000 students from across the eastern region of the country. Three South Kingstown High School students, Catherine Livonia on violin, Manny Morales on trumpet and Brandon Smith on double bass were selected to perform with the All-East honors ensembles in early April, a rare instance in which more than one student is selected from the same school.
