SOUTH KINGSTOWN â The town council seeks a meeting with the school committee to discuss next yearâs financial outlook after the school committee accepted the Reconfiguration Committeeâs recommendation to make four equal neighborhood schools and move the pre-school program.
The council voted to direct six possible dates to convene with the school committee through the end of August.
After the school committee adopted Plan 29 on June 28, which will move students from Peace Dale and redistrict them to the three other elementary schools, council members expressed concern that the plan will still not stave off thousands needed for next yearâs budget. Plan 29 is expected to save about $200,000.
âWe need to see them as soon as possible. I do not think they are seeing what we see for next year, which is going to get ugly,â Councilman Jim OâNeill said at Monday nightâs meeting.
Community members also lamented the need for the council and school committee to meet.
Jonathan Daly Label expressed his disappointment in the school committee for cancelling its July 13 meeting during such volatile time. The next meeting will be Aug. 16, the only meeting scheduled for that month as well.
