The Rhode Island fishing industry is getting some support after the state senate passed two resolutions asking for better industry representation federally and for more funding to support the domestic seafood market.
The first resolution urges state federal representatives to secure Rhode Island voting representation on the Mid-Atlantic Council. Senator Susan V. Sosnowski of South Kingstown introduced the resolution and the senate passed it at Wednesday nightâ€™s meeting. The resolution supports federal Senator Jack Reed in his efforts to bring more representation to the Rhode Island fishing industry.
The Rhode Island Senate Task Force on Fisheries was established to provide a forum for individuals and organizations in the fishing community to present ideas and identify challenges facing them. However, according to the resolution, one of the challenges facing the fishing community is the lack of representation on the Mid-Atlantic Marine Fisheries Council.
The Mid-Atlantic Council is one of eight regional fishery management councils established with the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery and Conservation Management Act of 1976. The Councils are responsible for the management of fisheries in federal waters and make recommendations regarding fisheries management policies to the secretary of commerce through the National Marine Fisheries Service.
The Mid-Atlantic Council manages several fisheries, including Atlantic mackerel, squid, and butterfish fisheries. Also, Rhode Island gets large amounts of these fisheries managed by the Mid-Atlantic Council, including 18 percent of total landings for Atlantic mackerel, 38 percent of total landing for ilex squid, 48 percent of total landings for butterfish, and 54 percent of total landings for loligo squid.
The second resolution also introduced by Sosnowski and passed Wednesday night requests that the Rhode Island Congressional Delegation works with representatives of other seafood-producing states to secure adequate funding for effective and sustained domestic marketing of United States seafood.
