Scott Partington takes over as Narragansett fire chief

December 2, 2013

Narragansett Fire Chief Scott Partington, above, has been working for the department since 1991.

NARRAGANSETT- Scott Partington is taking the helm as fire chief with the Narragansett Fire Department.

Partington began working for the Narragansett Fire Department in 1991 when he was hired as a probationary officer and has gradually been promoted to positions including lieutenant, captain and now fire chief.

Partington replaces James Cotter who retired in June after 10 years as fire chief.

Partington is currently a Charlestown resident, but said he has always been fond of Narragansett and would visit the town every summer when growing up.

“We would come to Narragansett almost every summer when I was a child and I have so many fond memories visiting the beach and just enjoying time here,” said Partington. “I even lived in Narragansett for a while and really enjoy being and working in this community.”

His relationship with the fire service also started at an early age when he would spend a lot of time at the Pawtucket Fire Department with his father who worked there until he retired in 1988. Being exposed to the fire station as a child, Partington said that it was always a comfortable place for him but he wasn’t sure if that was what he wanted to do for his future career.

While attending Rhode Island College in the 1980s, Partington said that his interest for the fire service was reignited once he enrolled in an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) class.

“I have always been exposed to fire stations and the fire department because of my father but I didn’t always think that I would be working at a fire department,” said Partington. “Once I took an EMT class when I was in college, I just fell in love with it. I was able to meet fire fighters and then I decided to take the placement test, because I knew that was what I wanted to do.”
