Tsarnaev family prepared to receive son Tamerlane’s remains
PROVIDENCE—According to statement released on Tuesday by her attorney Amato DeLuca, Katherine Russell and the Tsarnaev family will be able to receive the remains of her slain husband, the Boston Marathon bomber Tamerlane Tsarnaev. Russell, a native of North Kingstown, has been the center of an FBI investigation regarding her knowledge of her husband’s activities leading up to his April 15 bombing of the Boston Marathon and subsequent evasion of police, resulting in four deaths and over 170 people injured.
“We have just been informed that the Massachusetts Medical Examiner’s Office is prepared to release the remains of Tamerlane Tsarnaev,” read DeLuca’s statement. “It is Katherine Russell’s wish that his remains be released to the Tsarnaev family, and we will communicate her wishes to the proper authorities.”
According to multiple media outlets, the FBI has obtained the DNA of a woman on a piece of a pressure cooker which Tamerlane and his brother, 19-year old Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, turned into deadly bombs to kill spectators at the Boston Marathon. Russell’s house was also searched last week by FBI investigators, and DeLuca has stated that the 24-year old widow remains cooperative with their work.
“In the coming days, Katherine will continue to meet with law enforcement, as she has done for many hours over the past week, and provide as much assistance to the investigation as she can,” continued the statement.
Russell grew up in North Kingstown and attended the town’s local schools. She and Tamerlane were married in 2010 and have a 3-year-old daughter together. Russell, who was raised Catholic, converted to Islam to marry Tsarnaev and soon began wearing the traditional Muslim clothing, including a hijab, or a veil worn over Muslim women’s heads.
North Kingstown Police has been patrolling the area surrounding Russell’s home at 10 Coriander Lane over the past two weeks, keeping the large group of national and state media at arms length from Russell and her family, as well as the investigation.
“Our personnel is aware of the location and are making periodic checks to the location and neighborhood due to the attention and activity,” said Mulligan. “We have received calls from several residents of this neighborhood due to the number of media outlets parked along the streets that have become bothersome and out of character for the area.”
Russell attended Suffolk University in Boston but dropped out before graduating. She lived with Tsarnaev and their daughter in their Cambridge apartment. It’s been reported that the three would spend weekends at her family’s home.
In the North Kingstown High School 2007 yearbook, it stated she was involved in the dance team and the art club. Her future plans were to attend college and Peace Corps. In the senior profile section she included a quote that read: “Don’t believe in yourself, don’t deceive with belief. Knowledge comes from death’s release.”
Last week, DeLuca released a statement regarding the Russell family’s shock at the events which her husband and his brother perpetrated the week of April 15, including the murder of MIT police officer Sean Collier and the car jacking and kidnapping of a local resident in Cambridge, Mass. in an attempt to evade the expansive state and local police search.
“Since [marrying Tamerlane in 2010, Katie] has been living in Cambridge, raising her child and working long hours, caring for people in their homes who are unable to care for themselves,” read the statement. “She is fortunate to have the support of her loving family now, as they, too, struggle to come to terms with these events and the deep sorrow we all feel following the events of last week.”
“As a mother, a sister, a daughter, a wife, Katie deeply mourns the pain and loss to innocent victims - students, law enforcement, families and our community,” it continued. “In the aftermath of this tragedy, she, her daughter and her family are trying to come to terms with these events.”
The search, which ended on Friday, April 19 with the capture of Dzhokhar and the prior killing of Tamerlane by police, resulted in the total lockdown of the Greater Boston area, including the city itself and surrounding suburbs.
Russell has been seen traveling between her parents’ home in North Kingstown and DeLuca’s law office in Providence while the FBI investigation continues.
