RIDE gives two schools ‘warning’ status

EAST GREENWICH — The strong reputation of the East Greenwich School Department took a little bit of a hit this past week when two institutions received some low marks from the Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE) for this most recent school year.

RIDE recently released its 2013 school classification summary, showing in detail statistics via a point system regarding topics such as student growth, achievement gaps and graduation rates from one year to the next. Unfortunately, both East Greenwich High School and Meadowbrook Farms School were given a “warning” rating, which is in the lower half of the Department of Education’s classification ranking system.
In a phone interview with RIDE spokesperson Elliot Krieger last Friday, both schools were given “warning” classifications for different reasons. East Greenwich High School, Krieger said, got its status based on its achievement gaps, which are numbers that show the differences in performances between students with disabilities, English language learners and students of color from the rest of the student body.
Krieger said EGHS, out of a possible 30 points, received a score of 12 in the “subgroup gap” category on the classifications listing for this year. Last year, according to Krieger, East Greenwich High had a score of 24 regarding achievement gaps.
“It was significantly wider this year,” Krieger said of East Greenwich High’s achievement gap. “That put them in the “warning” category even though they have a general overall good performance at the school.”
Meadowbrook Farms, on the other hand, received its “warning” status because of a lack of “student growth,” a category which, Krieger said, shows improvement from year to year on the individual student level.
