Richmond hires new town administrator

September 19, 2013

Robert Basler Rock has been hired as the new town administrator in Richmond.

RICHMOND — In a surprise reveal Tuesday night, the town council announced it had hired a new town administrator – someone energetic, well-qualified, and media-savvy.

“Will the real Robert Basler Rock please stand up?” joked Town Council President B. Joseph Reddish as he introduced the newly hired town administrator to the audience. All heads turned as a young man who had been sitting quietly in the back of the town council chambers stood to accept applause and congratulatory handshakes.

Rock, who said he likes to be addressed as “Rob,” has worked for the secretary of state in the elections division for eight years. He is a 2005 graduate of University of Rhode Island where he is currently pursuing a Masters in Public Administration (MPA). A native and resident of East Providence, he is 30 years old and single.

“I’m still getting the information about the town – I’ve done a lot of research. I talked with the previous town administrator already,” he said. “Someone mentioned it tonight and I’ve heard it numerous times that I have big shoes to fill.”

Reddish said the council interviewed two of the three candidates from the selection committee (the third had already accepted a job offer) and chose Rock because of his innovative ideas, education, and understanding of the town’s values.
