oakers take control of Division II

January 7, 2011

WEST WARWICK — Coventry’s Zach Levesque was in middle school the last time he scored four goals in a hockey game.
Last night, it was déjà vu for the 5-foot, 6-inch senior as he scored all four goals for the Oakers in a 4-0 shutout over the Middletown Islanders.
“This was the first time in my high school career that I’ve scored four goals and I feel good about it,” smiled Levesque. “Yeah, middle school was the last time that happened. My teammates were great out there tonight and they made it possible for me to get those goals out there. We still have a lot of work to do as a team, but we are working hard and getting better.”
It wasn’t Coventry’s best performance of the season according to head coach Kenny Bird, but he was pleased to see his team win its seventh win overall and gain sole possession of first place in Division II Central.
“We definitely suffered some lapses out there on the ice tonight, I don’t think there was a 100 percent effort from all of our players. I feel we can play better than we showed tonight,” said Bird. “Zach Levesque obviously had a big game scoring four goals and Spencer Patti was terrific in net with a shutout. It was a good win to have and we had some guys flying around out there, but we never everybody on the same page creating tempo. We can definitely play better and we hope to be at our peak come March.”
The Oakers have gained a reputation as one of the most feared teams offensively in Division II and were tied with Portsmouth for the most goals scored with 32 headed into last night’s action.
But the play of Patti is changing that perception as he enjoyed his first shutout of the season with 26 saves and lead a stellar defensive effort.
“I felt good out there tonight,” said Patti. “I was really focusing on rebounding control all week. But a shutout is a team effort. My defense played well in front of me and so did the forwards and I really can’t ask for anymore than that.”
Coventry will be looking for its seventh consecutive win against Toll Gate a week from today.
