New Richmond Senior Center officially opens

June 12, 2011

RICHMOND – If you are 50 years of age or older, you are cordially invited to attend the grand opening of the new Richmond Senior Center today, June 12.

The event is the culmination of eight months of hard work that began Oct. 6 following the demise of the Richmond Senior Citizens Association. Since then, it has all been managed by the town and accomplished by a motivated group of volunteers.

“There are no paid employees, just volunteers who want to ensure there are activities for our adult community,” Dennis McGinity, Chairman of the Richmond Senior Activities Committee, said at the center on Monday morning. “The volunteers are the backbone/cornerstone of this organization.”

He then said that, as the chairman, he is very proud of the committee and all of the work the members have done in a short amount of time. “They have done an outstanding job of revitalizing the senior center,” he added.

McGinity explained that the reason these volunteers have come together isn't for praise or anything like that. It's because they all care and are passionate about what they do.

“It's a lot of work, but it's very satisfying,” he said, adding that he is at the center around 40 hours every week. “It's a labor of love for the community.”

Some of that labor included getting down and dirty the previous weekend when a donor dropped off two pallets full of mulch. And a group of volunteers, ages 50 to 80, laid down all the mulch you can see in front of the center, which is above the Richmond Police Station.

McGinity said that the purpose of the center is to improve the quality of life for seniors in the community.

That community, he added, is not just the town Richmond. Membership is open to residents of any and all towns and cities.

They have had people come in from Mystic, Conn., Exeter, and even a Florida resident who comes to Rhode Island during the summer. As long as you are 50 years old or older, you can join. The membership fee is $15.

And the grand opening event is a perfect way of learning about the organization if you're interested has been piqued. McGinity said that there will be exhibits and demonstrations of activities.

Many activities are already running at the center, including exercise classes “sit get fit,” cardio, and yoga; knitting, art, and crafts classes; and much more. You can also just stop by on weekdays from 8:30 to 11 a.m. for free coffee and pastries.

The Richmond Senior Center's grand opening takes place June 12 from 1 to 5 p.m. It is located above the police station at 1168 Main St. in Wyoming. Parking is available in front and behind the building along with at the nearby Arcadia YMC. For more information, you can call 491-9404 or e-mail
