Memoir takes readers back in history

March 6, 2014

“Evening Gowns and Dancing Slippers” is the story of Margaret Pilkington Riley's life in Rhode Island, which began in the 1920's. Left is Riley at age 20; right is in 1999.

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – Local poet, fiction writer and journalist Margaret Pilkington Riley remembers iceboxes, household radios and tight-knit families. She remembers traveling by bicycle and chalk drawings on the sidewalk. This, she says in her memoir, Evening Gowns and Dancing Slippers, was life in the 1920s.

“There aren't many people around that lived in the 1920s and 1930s anymore,” said Riley. “I just want my children and grandchildren to know how different it was. The guys played marbles. We played hopscotch. We read a lot and played a lot. I didn't dare come in; the fresh air was wonderful. I wanted to get that across to the youth of today.”
