Mega appointed to SK School Committee

September 11, 2013

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – In an unexpected turn of events, the South Kingstown Town Council unanimously appointed Dr. Tony Mega to the South Kingstown School Committee Monday.
Mega, who served on the school committee from 2004 until he resigned in July 2012, will fill the vacancy left by Liz Morris, who resigned last month.
Morris was re-elected in November and her term expires November 2016, however, Mega will only serve until the next election in November 2014.
Roland Benjamin and Bob Trager also applied for the vacancy.
Benjamin was viewed as the front-runner for the position, as he applied for the vacancy left by Mega’s departure last summer, but the council opted instead to appoint Keith Vorhaben.
Benjamin then ran for a seat on the school committee in the last election but was the fifth highest vote getter for four seats. Benjamin won 16.2 percent of the vote, to Jonathan Daly-LaBelle’s 16.9 percent.
