Mariners able to defend against Westerly rivals

April 30, 2014

The Mariners baseball team celebrates a difficult win over the Bulldogs on Friday night.

NARRAGANSETT — Everybody’s knuckles were white by the end of Friday night’s baseball battle at Sprague Field, and it wasn’t just because of the cold weather. The Division II - South matchup between Narragansett and Westerly was long anticipated after their last exciting encounter at McCoy Stadium in 2013. The Mariners knocked Westerly out of the state semifinals and there’s no question that the Bulldogs were looking to take back a little of their pride on Friday night. It didn’t happen.

“I credit Kullen McGill,” coach Keith Vellone said postgame. “He pitched us out of some jams in the early innings, he bared down defensively. We didn’t play our best defense tonight and we needed to in order to beat this team, so he really picked us up.”
