Sabrina Nuttall had one of her best swims of the high school season at the Rhode Island Girls Swimming Championships a little over one month ago and since then the freshman from South Kingstown hasnât slowed down.
Competing for the South County YMCA Nuttall took second place in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:08.81 at the YMCA New England Championships and in the process qualified for the YMCA Nationals.
âWeâve been able to maintain her progress really well,â SCY coach Mark Kiely said by phone Tuesday. âSheâs fantastic, she works hard and itâs all due to her hard work.â
While Nuttall certainly had a standout performance she was not the only local to swim well.
âItâs a really cool meet and itâs really fun for the kids,â Kiely said. âThereâs usually some fast swimming so we had some mixed results across the board.â
The meet â which features 90 teams according Kiely â runs over the course of two weekends and after this weekend the SCY girls sit in 10th place and the boys in 11th place.
âI thought they swam really, really well as a group,â Kiely said. âThey trained very hard for it and overall almost everyone had personal bests. The best part about it is how they supported each other.â
Kielyâs son â Asher, the 2013 RILL state champ in the 200 individual medley â was the only one to take a first place finish this weekend as he battled through illness to win 100 backstroke for the 15-and-up age group.
SCY also had a number of strong performances in the relays as the team of Cassie St. Angelo, Marissa McPhillips, Sam Ayvazian-Hancock and Nuttall combined to take second in both the 13-14 year-old A-medley and A-freestyle relays.
On the boys relay side Theo Simmons, Joe Hedde, Ean Kiely and Teddy Evans combined to take third in both the 11-12 year-old A-medley and A-freestyle relays, while Ben Roach, Robert Cassidy, Dan and Asher Kiely finished 10th in the 15-and-up 4x400 relay.
Individually Ean Kiely led the way competing in the 11-12 year-old age group with a fourth in the 100 butterfly, sixth in the 50 fly and eighth in the 200 free.
Also in the 11-12 age group Christina McPhillips was fourth in the 100 fly, eighth in the 50 fly and eighth in the 200 IM, Teddy Evans took sixth in the 50 free and Abigail Ladsatter finished 10th in the 100 backstroke.
In the 13-14 year-old age group Joe Hedde took eighth in the 100 breast and 10th in the 100 IM, while Ayvazian-Hancock was seventh in the 100 free.
Narragansettâs Xia Whitaker rounded out the top 10 finished for South County with a ninth place result in the 100 breast in the 15-and-up age group.
YMCA New Englands will wrap up this weekend at Springfield College with 8-and-under and 9-10 year-old age groups.
