Hank’s Down South bringing a different flavor to Galilee

NARRAGANSETT- There’s a new guy in town. Today, Sept. 20, is the grand opening for Hank’s Down South, a new barbecue restaurant and bar in Galilee.

Located at 33 State St., Hank’s Down South bar and barbecue restaurant is not your average venue in Narragansett. Instead of focusing on seafood, owner Amy Mason said that she wanted to use her experience with barbecue to bring authentic southern cuisine to the fishermen.

Mason said one of the best features of Hank’s is the smoker.

“Barbecue in Rhode Island is something I wanted to do for many years. I wanted to be different, I wanted to be that new kid on the block who does something different,” said Mason. “They are all doing seafood and they do it so well, but I don’t want to compete with them. I want to do my own thing because smoking is a really, really unique art and, if you smoke food well, it is amazing.”

Some of the cuisine includes hickory barbecue beef brisket, maple barbecue pulled pork, pecan pie and baked macaroni and cheese.

With her experience in traditional southern cuisine, the self-taught Mason said that she personally instructs each chef in her kitchen to perfect the menu.

“I’m not an American Culinary Institute or Johnson and Wales graduate, just my own stuff. I am a self-taught chef,” said Mason.
