Hagopian wants better deterrent for student partying

June 5, 2014

NARRAGANSETT – Several recurring issues were discussed at Monday evening’s town council meeting. Among these issues was the recent partying with URI students in the area of Eastward Look which continued to spark debate and concern among the public and council members.

Council members continued to mull over whether to further increase the fines for disturbing the peace and similar misdemeanors to the maximum amount of $500 per offense, but some members felt that the increase in fines is not properly deterring the unruly behavior.

“The fines, in my mind, don’t appear to be a deterrent of the behavior. These kids don’t seem to have a problem paying. Why don’t we send them to court and put a black mark on their record?” questioned council member Glenna Hagopian.
