PORTSMOUTHâ€”The shore along Town Pond in Portsmouth is thick with mud, enough to clasp down on anyoneâ€™s boot and keep it fastened there for a moment. Broken shells litter the beach, and the waterâ€™s surface is choppy because of the winds coming off Narragansett Bay. Here is the perfect environment for shellfish cultivation, and as coastal ponds throughout Rhode Island are being utilized for their shellfishing bounty, the public is growing more aware of the ecological and economic benefits of aquaculture to the state.
