Fishing survey a family event in Galilee

November 13, 2013

Brian Bellucci, Connor Bellucci, Adam Bellucci and Robby Marshall were among those chosen to participate in the second recreational fishing opportunity and scientific survey program held Monday in Galilee.

NARRAGANSETT- The Department of Environmental Management, in conjunction with the RI Party and Charter Boat Association and the Narragansett Department of Parks and Recreation, conducted the second recreational fishing opportunity and scientific survey program on Monday.

Every year, DEM’s Division of Fish and Wildlife is required to collect 200 samples of tautog in a diverse range of sizes for analysis in its scientific monitoring program. Data collected during the fish survey are used in the age structured stock assessment for that species.

As a way to create a charitable event out of the annual tautog collection, Dan Costa, port manager in DEM’s Division of Coastal Resources, suggested that a family participate in the fishing experience with the scientists.

“Last year I wanted to find a way to incorporate the community into our annual tautog collection, and this program really gives us the opportunity to build a great relationship with the community and with the RI Part and Charter Boat Association and with the Parks and Recreation Department,” said Costa. “ It is really a fun, feel good kind of event.”
