First Lady Michelle Obama addresses the crowd on Monday during an appearance in Quonset. She was on hand to inaugurate the keel laying for the SSN-786 Illinois, a Virginia-Class submarine currently being built at Electric Boat.

NORTH KINGSTOWN—Quonset was abuzz on Monday with local, state and national officials as the first lady Michelle Obama swung into town to inaugurate the keel laying for the SSN-786 Illinois, a Virginia-Class submarine currently being built at Electric Boat. The 377-foot long vessel was hailed as the pinnacle of current submarine design, and is equipped with the latest technology for open and covert warfare operations.

“Quonset has applied unique technologies and the skills of its workforce to continuously advance the industry standard,” said Jeffrey S. Geiger, president of Electric Boat, in his opening statement. “It has been an amazing story.”
