WEST GREENWICH – Exeter-West Greenwich girls soccer coach Kevin Fraser was not a happy camper.
For starters, Mount St. Charles had some transportation issues and didn’t arrive at EWG until 4:30, 30 minutes after the game was scheduled to start and his Knights had been waiting at the field for well over an hour.
And just before the game was about to start, there seemed to be more concern on the EWG side about what to do in the pre-game huddle than focus on the game at hand, which didn’t make Fraser super pleased.
But once the whistle blew, everything changed.
All the pregame nonsense that worried Fraser was instantly erased when the Knights’ dominated play from the start, coming up with the game’s first goal, which started a scoring binge as EWG topped Mount 6-2, a blowout win that all but made the Knights the favorite to make a return trip to the Division II finals.
“I’m not really surprised. I’m proud, but not surprised,” said EWG captain Lexi Clements, who scored two goals in the second half. “We have a great team and I knew we’d beat them.”
