EGFD makes case for new station in town

February 22, 2012

EAST GREENWICH — The cost of building a new East Greenwich Fire District Station 1 may still be too rich for some residents, but the price of land for its new home seemed right for most of them.

The state is seeking a $360,000 purchase price for a 2.2-acre parcel of land it owns at the southwest corner of Post Road and Cedar Avenue, district Chief Peter F. Henrikson told an audience of about 50 Saturday morning at a public hearing on the plan at New England Institute of Technology. By contrast, he said, a 3-acre parcel currently on the market on South County Trail is being offered at $1.2 million.

While Henrikson gave an estimate of $3.5 million for construction of a new station to replace the 98-year-old current Station 1 at 284 Main St. in the middle of downtown, the land purchase, for which the state Department of Transportation is expected to soon issue an RFP (request for proposals), won favorable reviews from both district officials and residents.
