KINGSTON – Daniel E. Doyle Jr., beleaguered former executive director of the Institute for International Sport, is proposing to move the institute and its events to the University of Central Florida.
In early May, Doyle, 64, was indicted on 18 counts of embezzlement, obtaining money under false pretenses and forgery, after allegedly personally obtaining more than $1 million from Institute for International Sport funds.
Doyle has been the subject of much public scrutiny since his mishandling of $575,000 in state grant money, which was allocated in 2007 for new construction yet remains unfinished, on the IIS property at the University of Rhode Island in Kingston.
The former IIS building has sat abandoned since August 2012.
“We have no obligations to the institute, the games or the buildings,” David Lavallee, spokesperson for URI, said of the buildings and Doyle’s proposal to move the IIS and its events to Florida. “We don’t owe the institute anything and they don’t owe us anything either.”
