Coventry seeks Gist’s approval on town and school agreement

April 29, 2011

COVENTRY—At a meeting held Thursday night by the town council a resolution was passed approving an agreement with the school committee that now must go before the state’s education commissioner.

The resolution passed is for an agreement with the schools that a $1.2 million increase that the town would like to give the schools for fiscal year 2012, be “EXCLUDED from future Maintenance of Effort calculations.”

The agreement was hand-delivered to the office of Rhode Island Education Commissioner Deborah A. Gist on Friday, Town Manager Thomas Hoover told the Times.

Hoover said that Gist can make the decision to give variances under the state general laws if it is for cause.

The school committee approved the agreement on Tuesday night after a lengthy discussion.
