SOUTH KINGSTOWN – The recent proposal to build a new Community Recreation Center in South Kingstown was met with strong opposition during the Monday evening town council meeting.
The proposal, on the agenda this time for the final step in funding, comes as the result of an increasing need within the schools for more recreational space to host various sports games and practices at home rather than having to rent space at other facilities such as URI.
During a previous town council meeting, resident and town council election candidate Joe Viele was solely opposed to the center, claiming that it would pose as competition for local fitness facilities and businesses. The council reassured him at the previous meeting that it would not.
