Chariho softball tops East Providence

April 4, 2011

EAST PROVIDENCE - Becky Williams threw seven innings of two-hit, one run ball and the Chariho offense came up with plenty of big hits in a 9-1 win over East Providence Monday afternoon.
One of the few games in the state to be played, the Chargers were more than ready for their season opener.
Williams showed why she is one of the state's best, striking out nine and keeping the Townies hitless through the first four innings. The senior also helped out at the plate, hitting an inside-the-park two-run home run in the sixth that gave Chariho a 6-0 lead.
The Chargers bats awoke early.
In the top of the second, freshman Jess Ryan came up with the game's first big hit, ripping a triple to right center before scoring after a throwing error.
Chariho scored twice on bases-loaded walks in the third and added two more in the fifth - one on an RBI single by Sydney Scott that scored Williams and the other on an RBI single by Brianna Cole.
Up 8-1 in the seventh, reserve Kellie Barnes too advantage of an at-bat, ripping a single that scored Scott for the game's final run.
Chariho plays in its home opener Thursday against Cranston West at 4 p.m.
