Canonchet Farm remains a hot button issue at town hall

February 10, 2011

NARRAGANSETT–The Town Council began their meeting with a moment of silence for George Lenihan, Sr., a local restaurateur and businessman who died on Feb. 4.

Next, Rep. Teresa Tanzi spoke about her support for an amendment to a 2001 law regarding Galilee. The 2001 law extends a forty year lease on the property. What Tanzi's bill does is extend the lease exclusively for fishing related purposes to help preserve it as a working waterfront. This act would allow property for commercial fishing industries to be rented for up to 40 years by the state. Tanzi also described her desire to look at loopholes and deductions in the tax code that were either outdated our possibly ineffective.

The main course of the evening was dedicated again to the Canonchet Farm master plan. Last month Mike DeLuca presented the Planning Board's proposal. On Monday, the council attempted to split the items up for discussion into "controversial" and "non-controversial" parts, limiting discussion to an hour. It was believed by the council that items with general support from the Planning Director's master plan were museum development, the carriage house, garden development, nature center, camping, beech grove, Linear Park, fishing pier/docks, signs, utilities. However, a consensus on these issues did not last long.

The Friends of Canonchet Farm's President, Tom Fortier, conditioned his approval saying that the Friends would like to be involved in how the "non-controversial" items are characterized in the final plan. Fortier has previously submitted a highlighted summary (which can be found on the organization's website) detailing the Friends' position on the Planning Board's executive summary.

Go with the friends. This property is too diverse for the town to manage. Barry (Parks and Rec) should recognize that management of that property is way beyond his ability?
