CHARLESTOWN - A box containing 14 kittens was found abandoned Saturday on Indian Cedar Drive, off Kings Factory Road.
The kittens were in pretty rough shape, found squished and sealed in the box among their own urine and feces, according to Charlestown Police.
Police said all of the kittens were alive in the box, though one had suffered head trauma, causing its eyes to be pushed out of the sockets.
Police brought the kittens, which are estimated to be about 10 weeks to 12 weeks old and are pets, not feral cats, to Charlestown Animal Control.
The kittens remain at the animal shelter where they are being cared for and are undergoing medical treatment.
According to the animal control website, the kittens will not be available for adoption “for some time.”
Police said The Rhode Island Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is offering a $1,500 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the abandonment and neglect of the kittens. Anyone with information is asked to call Charlestown Police at 364-1212.
