Bike path from Commons to Broad Rock a step closer

December 16, 2013

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – The South Kingstown Town Council unanimously approved a resolution Monday authorizing the submittal of an application to the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management for funding to develop the proposed bike spur between the Broad Rock Playfields and the South County Commons.

Town Manager Stephen A. Alfred said the town’s recreation department under Terry Murphy recently completed an application for funding through RIDEM’s Recreation and Acquisition and Development Grant Program for 50 percent of the estimated cost of the project.

The $600,000 project has been included in the town’s capital plan since 2005, but because a portion of the proposed bike path was located on private property, the town was unable to begin the full project without assent from the owner of the South County Commons.
