Bagelz presents work from artist Susan Gold Purdy

September 27, 2013

Artist Susan Gold Purdy’s work will be on view through Nov. 22 at Bagelz, 90 Pershing Ave., Wakefield. An opening reception will be held Saturday, Sept. 28, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

NARRAGANSETT- Bagelz of Wakefield is presenting the work of Connecticut artist Susan Gold Purdy during the open art show on Saturday, Sept. 28.
Although this will be the Purdy’s first time displaying her work in Rhode Island, she is a well-known cookbook author, illustrator, and painter.
“I have been painting all my life in New York and Connecticut and exhibited in many galleries where I live in Connecticut. I mean I really do this because I like to share my work and my vision of the world,” said Purdy. “I am also a professional author of cook books so I create art based on what I have been around, and I am very involved in the food world so that is visible in my paintings.”
Her artwork features recent watercolors and pastels of farmers markets, vegetables, and Rhode Island coastal scenes. She uses pastels and watercolors as her main mediums because they offer a sense of immediacy. They also allow her the freedom to draw and paint outside on location, said Purdy.
“The collection is primarily pastel and watercolor because I like to travel and also like to paint outside when I can. Some of these paintings are from my travels in France and in Rhode Island,” said Purdy. “Actually, a lot of watercolors in this gallery are from the Rhode Island shore because I really love to paint outdoors on the beach and use my watercolors to capture that.”
According to Purdy, her goal when creating artwork is to find patterns and designs in everyday objects and landscapes. She also tries to create images that capture the essence of the object or place and bring it to life in a fresh way.
“I like to paint from my own perspective and my own vision of the world so it is not one hundred percent realistic and is different for every person,” said Purdy. “I really hope other people will see the world around them in a fresh way after they come to the gallery and I hope they enjoy the show.”
Scott Lieberman, employee of Bagelz, said that the art galleries are something both the employees and public look forward too.
“We will have this show on display until November but we often have galleries and switch it out and when we do everyone always likes checking it out and it is really cool to see the different styles and techniques that people have,” said Lieberman. “We are really looking forward to having this opening gallery and I hope that everyone comes out and supports the artists’ first time showing in Rhode Island.”
The opening reception will be open to the public on Saturday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Bagelz, 90 Pershing Ave., Wakefield. For those who are not able to attend the opening reception, Purdy’s work will be on display through Nov. 22.
