NARRAGANSETT--Joseph Penrose and Alex LaVallee co-own and recently opened Anytime Fitness, a 24-hour gym on Nov. 1. The gym is one of three such centers in Rhode Island and is open seven days a week throughout the year. It is guarded by security cameras and accessed through the use of a individualized security card. But if you enter, prepare to be energized.
“Fitness is not a sprint it’s a marathon,” LaVallee said, laughing. “That’s a good quote,” Penrose said.

Penrose says that an Olympian or a beginner could come to Anytime Fitness and leave satisfied. “Our gym has everything someone would need,” he said. New members, who the owners assure (at most) will pay no more than a dollar a day, each receive a free introductory fitness assessment. The assessment and the staff then discuss diet, exercise routines, and the means by which members can attain their goals. “It doesn’t make sense to spend money everyday drinking caffeine at a donut shop when for that price you could have a gym membership…one where you can feel natural energy,” Penrose said.
