Allen named Charlestown Chief of Police

August 30, 2012

CHARLESTOWN - A 5-member selection committee appointed South Kingstown Police Capt. Jeffrey Allen as the new Chief of Police in Charlestown on Monday night. Allen will replace 30-year veteran of the Charlestown Police Dept. Jack Shippee, who stepped down in June.

Allen has been a South Kingstown police officer for almost 26 years, and said that while he is excited for his new position, he will miss the community he has served for so long.

“Getting appointed to Charlestown is bittersweet,” Allen said. “I’m looking forward to the opportunity to lead that agency, but I’m going to miss the men and women I work with here and the community that I serve. I’ve spent a lot of time here, I’ve been here since I was 24.”

Allen will meet with Acting Charlestown Town Manager Pat Anderson, who was a member of the appointing committee, to determine his exact start date, which is expected to be in a few weeks. He said that he is ready to learn the department and lead it.

“Being a new chief, I need to go down there and assess the situation,” Allen said. “I already know I’m going into an excellent police department with great personnel. I need to take time to learn the department, the personnel and the community. I plan to listen to my command staff and go from there.”

“I plan on leading the department into the future,” he added.
Lieutenant Michael Paliotta of Charlestown has been the acting chief in Shippee’s absence for the past few months. Charlestown Town Council President Tom Gentz said that while he believes it is beneficial to have someone from the inside move up when a new position opens, Capt. Allen was the best candidate for the position.

“The town of Charlestown hired the best person for the job,” Gentz, who was part of the interview committee, said Tuesday. “Capt. Allen provided a great interview, he is an exceptional person.”
