After 40 years, Windus decides to lower his sails

July 2, 2014

SOUTH KINGSTOWN - Norm Windus, coordinator of sailing programs at the University of Rhode Island for more than 40 years, has chosen to retire from his position and to leave it in the capable hands of Chris Liberti, a seven-year student of Windus.
While Windus’ last day was Friday, he took the time to speak with The Narragansett Times from his office on Monday. He began by reflecting on the changes made to the recreational and instructional sailing programs in his tenure as the coordinator.
“Probably the biggest thing that occurred in my time running that spot was the construction of a new facility down on Salt Pond in 1992,” he began. “Originally, the sailing pavillion was a 16-by-24-foot shack. That was what we operated out of for a considerable period of time. We didn’t have huge numbers of people in those days, but it started getting to the point where we knew we needed the bigger building.”
