SOUTH KINGSTOWN—A motor vehicle accident which occurred early Wednesday morning has claimed the life of its rear seat passenger. Erica L. Knowles, 23, of 95 Wood Lane, South Kingstown, was pronounced dead at Rhode Island Hospital Wednesday. Two other persons were involved in the accident, the driver Dean Philbrick, 46, of 50 Harcourt Ave., Wakefield, and Rebecca Scott, 29, of 12 Lily Lane, Narragansett.

“Officers on scene responded as quickly as possible,” said Captain Jeffrey Allen of South Kingstown Police Department. “South Kingstown and Narragansett Fire arrived, and unfortunately it was a horrific scene with significant injuries.”

“There was a motor vehicle against a tree at bottom of Torrey Hill,” said Captain Scott Partington of the Narragansett Fire Department. “We treated a gentleman in the car, and SKFD treated the female in the car. We got the call at midnight on Wednesday morning. I was told that there was a lot of intrusion when the car crumpled into the compartments of the vehicle.”

Scott was treated and released from South County hospital, while Philbrick remains at Rhode Island Hospital, although his condition is unknown. Allen believes that alcohol and the vehicle’s speed were primary causes for the accident. No other vehicles were involved.
SKPD has sent an accident reconstruction unit to the scene twice over the past two days, and the investigation of the official causes, in conjunction with the Rhode Island Attorney General’s Office, is still ongoing.
