Avengers optimistic of another strong year

EAST GREENWICH – After a stellar 20-1 record in 2012 that culminated with a Division II championship victory over West Warwick, the East Greenwich softball team lost three team captains and three of the team’s more productive starters.

Slowed by illness and injury, East Greenwich senior Ben Fazio had a tough end to his cross country season with a 20th place performance after finishing in 18th the year before.
“I had my first ever injury at the beginning of cross country and then I had mono throughout the whole season,” Fazio says. “Cross Country’s my favorite season and not having a good season definitely gave me some motivation to do better in indoor.”

Seniors Karly Gregory and Victor Ricci have been the unquestioned front runners of the Prout girls and boys track teams, respectively, for the past few years.

GAUVIN MAKING HER PRESENCE FELT
Samantha Gauvin is finally getting her chance and she’s making the most of it.
Gauvin, from Coventry (The Prout School), has been a role player for the Ursiline softball team the past three seasons but this year, she’s become a starter for the Arrows, from Pepper Pike, OH. She’s starting at catcher and is hitting .222 (6-for-27) with a double, three RBI and five runs scored. Behind the plate, she’s made just two errors on 57 chances (.965).

Crusaders in the mix

For most teams there is usually one game that it looks forward to all season; the rivalry contest against a neighboring school.
That is not the case for the Prout boys lacrosse team; this season the Crusaders’ will have six.
As a result of realignment Prout will compete in a somewhat new looking Division II-South that features neighbors East Greenwich, Narragansett and South Kingstown, as well as Aquidneck Island foe Middletown.

East Greenwich is the defending Division II softball champions after defeating West Warwick in the finals last season.
Pilgrim eliminated Exeter-West Greenwich from the second round of the consolation bracket before falling to the Wizards in the next round.

Rebels, 'Gansett ready to get going

NARRAGANSETT – With the newly realigned Rhode Island Interscholastic League divisions, the 2013 boys lacrosse season kicked off with 2012 Division II runner-up South Kingstown taking on last season’s Division III runner-up Narragansett. The neighbors are now division foes in what should hopefully be a competitive D-II rivalry for a few years to come.

NARRAGANSETT—Last season the Narragansett softball team went winless in Division II and more often than not couldn’t hang with their competition.
Now in Division III, the Mariners might be on the polar opposite end of the spectrum.
