Marchesseault K’s 16 in a loss

July 25, 2013

WEST WARWICK — The West Warwick Post Two American Legion baseball team desperately needed to win Tuesday’s regular-season finale against Gordon Greene to avoid playing in the single-elimination round of the upcoming Legion playoffs.
Of course, they didn’t expect to win the game in the manner they did.

SK rolls into playoffs on hot streak

July 25, 2013

WEST WARWICK – It is one of the oldest clichés in the game of baseball; “It’s not a sprint, it’s a marathon.”
It is also a cliché that may end up defining the summer of 2013 for the South Kingstown Post 39 baseball team.
After struggling early in the season – opening up with a 3-9 record – Post 39 turned it on over the final eight days of the regular season to roll into the playoffs as one of the hottest teams in the league.
SK went 6-3 in that span, which culminated with their 6-5 win over West Warwick Post Two on Monday night at McCarthy Field.

ON THE EDGE: Bartlett shines at Save The Bay swim

July 25, 2013

Narragansett’s Fred Bartlett proved beyond a doubt that is he one of the greatest athletes to come out of South County this past weekend.
He accomplished a rare feat in the highly competitive world of triathlons, winning the men’s overall title in back to back contests that featured world-class athletes.

South Kingstown alumni face off in tennis tourney

July 25, 2013

SOUTH KINGSTOWN—When the streak of state championships finally ended for the South Kingstown boys tennis team this spring initially there was shock.
Of course, how could there not be?
The Rebels entered the 2013 season having won 14 Division I Championships in a row only to see their run end with a late May loss to LaSalle in the semifinals.
Saturday – nearly two months after the end of the streak – former SK players from nearly the past two decades gathered at the tennis courts at Broad Middle School for the inaugural Alumni Doubles Tournament.

SK’s McKinley Slade shines at RI Amateur

July 18, 2013

NORTH KINGSTOWN— Recent South Kingstown High School graduate McKinley Slade is playing the kind of golf he always knew he was capable of.
Slade – who finished tied for third at the RIIL State Golf Championships this spring – made it all the way to the quarterfinals of the 108th Rhode Island Amateur Golf Tournament held at Quidnessett Country Club last week before finally falling to Ledgemont County Club’s Bobby Leopold.
After upsetting Ryan Pelletier 4 and 3 in the first round Thursday Slade – who entered the 32-golfer bracket as the No. 27 seed – knew he was in store for a good day.

Neighbor eliminates American

July 18, 2013

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – It had become something of a habit for the Narragansett 9/10-Year Old All-Stars in their games leading up to last Thursday’s District 3 consolation bracket final at Tuckertown Park against South Kingstown American. They would start slow, allow their opponent to build up a big cushion and then surge back for the win.
This time around it was Narragansett jumping out to the early lead before South Kingstown fought back from a six-run deficit.
Ultimately, however, Narragansett managed to hold on for an 11-10 win.

Post 39 snaps five-game losing skid

July 18, 2013

KINGSTON – It has been some time since South Kingstown Post 39 has taken the field and found themselves in the win column at game’s end.
Entering Monday night’s contest with Gershkoff Auto Body – Auburn Post 20, Post 39’s only win in July came via forfeit.
The team, however, carried over some strong play in their recent losses and finally translated it into a win, taking down Post 20 8-3 at the University of Rhode Island’s Bill Beck Field.
“I told them forget about that,” Post 39 coach Gary Lessard said of the losing streak. “We had a couple days off and now we’re on a roll.”

Narragansett’s tourney ends in Warwick

July 18, 2013

WARWICK—Most coaches will tell you getting off to a good start goes hand in hand with success.
Narragansett 9/10-Year Old All-Stars coach Jason Laurie is not one of those people.
Throughout the District 3 Tournament his squad has ritually started slowly but found a way to come from behind for the victory.
So when ’Gansett took a two-run lead after the first inning of Saturday’s District 3 Championship at Warwick Continental Laurie had a bad feeling.

Chariho 12’s fall short of district finals

July 18, 2013

CHARIHO — The journey ended far earlier than anyone associated with the Chariho Major Division all-star team would’ve hoped.
Chariho, which came out of the losers’ bracket last year to claim the District 3 title on its way to the 11-year-old state title, entered the Major Division tournament as the favorite, but the kids from Dow Field were knocked into the losers’ bracket by eventual District 3 champion Coventry American.

EG 11’s outslugged by SK

July 18, 2013

SOUTH KINGSTOWN – It was a tale of two teams for the South Kingstown National 11-Year Old All-Stars last week. After dropping their first game of the District 3 tournament in a runaway against Warwick Continental on Tuesday, the team came back on Thursday and did the same to their opponent, taking down East Greenwich by a score of 11-2 at Tuckertown Park.
