ACLU challenges N.K.’s political sign ordinance

NORTH KINGSTOWN – Last Wednesday, Rhode Island ACLU volunteer attorney Richard Sinapi filed a federal lawsuit against the town challenging the town’s ordinance that “discriminatorily” limits the posting of political signs in town. EWG student focuses on Cystic Fibrosis

EXETER – Over 30,000 children and adults are affected by cystic fibrosis (CF) in this country. CF is an inherited, chronic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system. One Exeter-West Greenwich High School senior has devoted her entire senior project on CF awareness and will be following a three year-old girl in her fight against the disease. As part of her project, Sequin Del Tufo has organized a 5K walk/run on Nov. 14 at Goddard Park, East Greenwich, to help make strides in CF research.

Architect to do study on W.E.S.

NORTH KINGSTOWN – Consolidation of both school and town administration offices to the former Wickford Elementary School, 99 Philips St. is still the plan. But, before that, Edward Rowse Architects will conduct a study on the final details of the project. The study will cost $19,500, which is negotiable, and will either be paid for out of the town’s capital reserve fund or the undesignated fund balance. “I think the price is awfully high, but that’s just my observation. We have a facilities sub-committee that’s made up of skilled contractors.

Wickford Horribles Parade invades downtown

The 2010 Wickford Horribles Parade went off swimmingly Sunday afternoon on Main Street and locals from all across Southern Rhode Island were on hand to display their best costumes.
From Optimus Prime to "Duke Vader", locals were dressed to the nines and a real sight to behold.

Exeter's Fernstrom adjusting well in role as Jamestown clerk

JAMESTOWN – In March Cheryl Fernstrom was selected from among 39 applicants to become this island’s town clerk, an honor that comes as no surprise to anyone who had dealings with Cheryl during her long tenure as Exeter’s town clerk.
In a time when age discrimination is all too common, her appointment was an endorsement of experience over youth. The town was willing to pay more for the best.

Remainder of Old Jamestown Bridge set for demolition

NORTH KINGSTOWN – Since the demolishing of the old Jamestown-Verrazzano Bridge in 2006, a 1,600 foot portion has remained intact on the North Kingstown side. The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) will soon begin to demolish that remaining piece.
RIDOT awarded a $961,000 contract to Reagan Construction Corporation of Middletown to remove the “trestle” portion of the old bridge. The section is the only piece of structure still standing from the 70 year-old bridge. The new bridge, located to the left of the old section, was opened in 1992.

Fry arraignment moved to Oct. 26

NORTH KINGSTOWN – Over a year after allegedly murdering her eight year-old daughter, Camden, on Aug. 11, 2009, a Washington County Grand Jury handed up an indictment on Oct. 8, to North Kingstown resident Kimberly Fry, 37, on one count of second-degree murder. Fry was not present in court. She was scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday, but at the request of the defense, the arraignment has been rescheduled for Oct. 26 in Washing County Superior Court.

Trio of RFP's aim to save Beechwood
