21 year-old sentenced for DUI resulting in death of friend

SOUTH KINGSTOWN—On Monday afternoon, a 21 year-old Richmond man was sentenced to 15 years with eight to serve at the ACI after driving under the influence last year, killing his friend after striking a utility pole. Zachary Thole, of 8 Twilight Road in Richmond, had a registered blood alcohol content of .102 the night of November 22, 2013, when he and his friends left Cornerstone Pub after drinking as minors.

District 35 candidates ready for primary

While pedaling on his bicycle around the various neighborhoods in North Kingstown, East Greenwich, South Kingstown and Narragansett that make up District 35 over the last few weeks, East Greenwich Town Councilman Mark Watkins Gee has seen many vehicles parked at the homes he’s visited with license plates showing oranges symbolizing the Sunshine State as opposed to the roaring wave of the Ocean State.

NK woman bikes to Oregon in memory of friend

NORTH KINGSTOWN - When Emily Lipsitz, a 21-year-old North Kingstown resident, left Baltimore for a cross-country fundraising bike tour to Portland, Oregon, she had no idea how much it would affect her life.
The group, riding for the non-profit 4kforcancer, left passionately with 28 members, and returned home in grief with one less friend.

Blanchette hired as new Jamestown superintendent

WOOD RIVER JUNCTION — Chariho Assistant Superintendent of Schools Carol Blanchette is leaving Chariho to become the Jamestown Superintendent of Schools. Blanchette will replace Jamestown’s Marcia Lukon, who retired in June after seven years as superintendent.
Blanchette was with the Chariho Schools for 16 years. From 1999 to 2003, she was the principal at Charlestown Elementary School and became principal at Chariho Middle School Principal from 2003 to 2008, when she became the Assistant Superintendent of Schools.

Gamba, Costa criticized for edited poster

NORTH KINGSTOWN—District 32 candidate Sharon Gamba has received a fair share of criticism over the past week by placing her name on a poster promoting North Kingstown resident and country music artist Tim Charron’s free concert, which took place last night. The poster was originally designed and approved by the concert organizer, the North Kingstown Arts Council, and distributed in the Aug. 21 edition of The Northeast Independent, a move which was not approved by the council.

Tempers flare at school committee meeting

August 28, 2014

NORTH KINGSTOWN—Frustration boiled over at Tuesday’s North Kingstown School Committee meeting as members had to wait for a quorum before commencing the voting portion of the agenda. With only three other members present, committee member William Mudge left the meeting without explanation.
Committee chair Kimberly Page asked Mudge to return, but he left the auditorium. Because committee members Robert Jones, Cheryl Clarkin, and Lynda Avanzato were not present, Mudge’s absence left the committee without a quorum through which votes could be passed or denied.

North Kingstown preps Old Towne House for winter

NORTH KINGSTOWN—At its Aug. 4 meeting, the North Kingstown Town Council discussed the possibility of moving the Old Towne House from its present site on Brown Street to Wilson Park, and idea which was ultimately deemed too costly.
“I had run some numbers and talked to contractors, but the cost was relatively high, to the point it was a wash in moving it or elevating it at its present location,” said Director of Public Works Phil Bergeron on Wednesday.

Reiner resigns as NK Town Planner

NORTH KINGSTOWN—On Tuesday afternoon, town manager Michael Embury announced that North Kingstown Town Planner Jon Reiner has resigned from his position. According to the release, the 35 year-old is taking a higher paying planner position in Groton, Conn.
“Since his arrival in June 16, 2005, Jon has demonstrated the highest degree of professionalism in moving North Kingstown forward with its zoning, planning projects, open space acquisition and agricultural preservation,” said Embury in his release. “Jon’s departure leaves a very large hole in the management team that will be hard to fill.”
